The autumn is finally here. The days are short, the nights are cold. While for many people it’s an occasion to get that winter jacket wholesale, many of us can feel tired, anxious and depressed. And this is not to be taken for granted – it’s called Seasonal Affective Disorder. It’s a kind of depression tied to less daylight during the fall and winter. As much as one in twenty people – mostly women – suffer from SAD. So if winter doldrums are getting you down, maybe you could fight the blues.
Many people use light therapy to fight SAD, using artificial devices for the light therapy. You can use some lamps that imitate warm daylight, for at least 30 minutes per day, within 10 minutes of waking up. Don’t use cold industrial light – and if you have some means of using warm fire light do so: use the last days of autumn to go camping with friends and build a fire!
And speaking of camping and hiking, use physical exercise to get in shape. Sure, often you’d rather curl up in bed rather than jog, physical exercise can help you stay in shape and discipline yourself. Mix up cardio with occasional yoga and Pilates! I use the winter weather to jog or march for a while – and I bike to work to get some vitamin D. Don’t bundle up in your winter jacket wholesale.
Exercise is a part of the daily routine – sometimes all we want is to curl up and sleep in, sure… Don’t “stay up five minutes”, if you have a smartphone you can program a lot of alarms into it. Stick to the regular bedtime and sleep schedule, and stick to certain meal times. Motivate yourself with rewards for good behavior.
Meet people – yes, winter is not the best time to meet new people, but you could take some extra classes or a book club. Spend an evening with a friend, or invite neighbors for pizza and a movie. Avoid depression by meeting friends.
And of course, the best way to combat depression is a winter vacation in a sunny location. Don’t take supplements, the good attitude is the best medication!
